Chilean president highlights copper nationalization and looks to the future of the lithium industry

Chilean President Borich delivered a key speech at a conference on July 11 to mark the 53rd anniversary of copper nationalization. He emphasized that since the nationalization of the Chilean Copper Company in 1971, the company has invested more than US$160 billion, and that these investments have been an important cornerstone of many of Chile's social welfare policies. The Chilean president noted that the development of the copper industry is not just about the country's economic prosperity, but is key to its future.

In terms of copper production, President Borich stated that Chile aims to achieve an annual production of 1.8 million tons of refined copper by 2030. This ambitious blueprint shows Chile's strong confidence in the continued development of the copper industry and signals the further consolidation of Chile's important position in the global copper market in the future.

In addition to the copper industry, President Borich also made special mention of Chile's National Lithium Strategy. He pointed out that the Atacama and Maricunga salt lake projects owned by Chilean copper companies will bring huge revenues to the country and promote the rapid development of the lithium mining industry. As an important metal widely used in batteries, ceramics and other fields, the market demand for lithium is growing rapidly, providing a huge opportunity for the development of Chile's lithium mining industry.

Speaking of the recent lithium mine tender, President Borich revealed that the government has received 80 formal intentions from various countries, which shows the global interest in Chile's lithium resources. He said the government will announce the allocation mechanism for the salt lake at the end of August to ensure fair competition and sustainable development of the lithium mining industry.
