Today, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released information about a $150 billion lithium discovery in Arkansas, USA. This discovery could be the catalyst for a global electric vehicle revolution, and could completely satisfy the world's demand for electric vehicle batteries, even exceeding the need by 2030 by a factor of nine. USGS geologists say the lithium mine is located in an area rich in oil and rust deposits with a geologic history dating back to the Jurassic period, spanning Texas to Florida. Lithium reserves underneath the state range from about 5 million to 19 million tons. There is currently no commercial lithium production in Arkansas, and the U.S. Department of Energy is in discussions with two lithium mining companies to consider providing up to $225 million for a project in southwest Arkansas to build a core lithium processing plant.
