Can industrial grade lithium carbonate be used instead of battery grade lithium carbonate?

Answer: No

1 Industrial grade lithium carbonate is mainly used in glass, ceramics, lithium batteries and other industrial fields, while battery grade lithium carbonate is mainly used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles and electronic devices.

2 Industrial grade lithium carbonate is less pure and contains more impurities, such as calcium, sodium, iron and other elements. These impurities reduce the quality and purity of lithium carbonate, so it is not suitable for the manufacture of high energy density batteries. Battery-grade lithium carbonate, on the other hand, has higher purity and energy density and can provide higher energy output and longer battery life.

3 In addition, the manufacturing processes for industrial grade lithium carbonate and battery grade lithium carbonate are different. Industrial-grade lithium carbonate is typically prepared by carbonation of ore or recycling of lithium-containing waste, while battery-grade lithium carbonate is prepared by extraction of lithium from electrolyte or lithium pyroxene concentrate. These differences in manufacturing processes also affect the quality and purity of the product.

4 Therefore, in general, industrial grade lithium carbonate cannot be used in place of battery grade lithium carbonate. If industrial-grade lithium carbonate is used in place of battery-grade lithium carbonate in the manufacture of batteries, it may lead to problems such as poor battery performance, short life, and safety hazards. Therefore, battery-grade lithium carbonate should be used instead of industrial-grade lithium carbonate when manufacturing batteries with high energy density.

5 In summary, industrial-grade lithium carbonate cannot be used directly in place of battery-grade lithium carbonate. If it is necessary to use lithium carbonate as a raw material for batteries, lithium carbonate products that meet battery-grade standards should be selected to ensure the performance and reliability of the battery. If you only need to use lithium carbonate as an industrial raw material, you can choose industrial grade lithium carbonate.
