Rio Tinto and EU join forces to help Serbia mine Europe's largest lithium mine

Serbia's strengths lie in its geographic location and its rich tourism resources, which contribute to economic development and international cooperation. Serbia has significant lithium reserves, particularly in the Vardar lithium borate belt, which is considered to be one of the largest lithium mines in Europe. Rio Tinto and the European Union plan to offer a new program for lithium mining in western Serbia to help develop the electric vehicle industry on the continent. Two years after the previous project was canceled, the government is considering giving the green light to Rio Tinto to develop Europe's largest lithium mine. President Vucic is confident and expects to receive a commitment from EU leaders to support the country's investments related to battery manufacturing and electric vehicle production. If all goes well, it is expected that the mine, which could start in 2028, would produce 58,000 tons of lithium per year, enough to meet 17% of Europe's electric vehicle production, which is equivalent to supporting the production of about 1.1 million vehicles.
