Chile plans to increase lithium production by 70% by 2030
The government has announced a plan to increase lithium production, with the overall goal of increasing Chile's current production of 250,000 tons of lithium by 70% by 2030 and doubling it over the next decade, according to the Chilean newspaper El Courier and El Tres Ocidental. The plan identifies the Atacama and Maricunga Salt Lakes as strategic salt lakes in which the state must have a majority ownership position. Both of these lakes are being led by the National Copper Company of Chile, and Codelco has entered into a partnership with SQM to develop the Atacama Salt Lake.
